Perfect Prom Dresses Under £100 At ASOS!

Friday 20 March 2015

I had a conversation last week that quite frankly disturbed me. A tale of a 15 year old girl wearing a £350 satin halter neck monstrosity to her high school prom that was purchased from a bridal shop under the guise of it being a 'one off' and therefore acceptable. Of course I gritted my teeth and nodded in all the right places while inspecting the pic but really I was crying inside. WHY?! First off, no parent should feel like they have to drop £350 on a one wear frock from hell. I'm not a parent, and I totally get how they want to feel super special, the peer pressure from their friends and how it must feel when your child wants something, but please, just say no to crazy shizz like this. Secondly, no teenage girl should even be wearing £350 worth of gross ballgown when there are literally hundreds of trendsome styles under £100 on the high street and on online stores like ASOS, AND you can wear them again without feeling like yes, you can go to the ball, albeit looking like the pumpkin carriage rather than Cinders. Thirdly, if you really do want to throw £350 at a dress for her because you have it and want to use it then fair do's, but you should definitely then be knocking at the doors of Ted Baker, Karen Millen, LBD and Flannels et al, still nowhere near that damn bridal store.

Anyhoo, I found these six hot under a hundred prom dresses in less than 30 minutes worth of browsing on ASOS. Prepare to be schooled 'rents . . .

prom dresses under £100 uk prom dress ideas ASOS

ASOS Salon Midi Dress in Floral Organza £85 - Perfect for the more petite little lady with it's sheer hemline. And that bardot neckline? SWOON.

ASOS Salon Premium Princess Mesh Maxi Dress £95 - If you're going to go full swoosh, do it in a modern mid-weight style in a gorgeous neutral.

Lashes of London Bardot Full Prom Midi Dress £65 - Metallics always make a statement and edge up a classic prom shape.

Chi Chi London Allover Floral Full Prom Skater Dress £58 - Gosh, this is everything. The thick luxe fabric, the sheen, the bold pattern and those jewel colours. I can imagine this in a Ted Baker window but with a price tag 4 times the size of this. SO beaut.

ASOS Premium Princess Mesh Maxi Dress £85 - So she's not a girly girl but still wants to be a girl for that special night, well, THIS. Maybe with ballet flats or DM's ;)

ASOS Clean T Shirt Maxi Dress With Fringe Back £65 - Fringes are totally in this season, and if she's confident enough for something a bit more grown up then this is the one.

See? Imagine what you could do with a few months to hand and a credit card. Sure you might have to make a few returns but hey, welcome to the grown up world of online shopping padawan! If you're truly afraid of the no try just buy online experience then head to the high street. As nice as they are, it's not just Monsoon and Debenhams that stock occasion dresses. Explore and think outside the box. TK Maxx can harbour epic dress finds, and if there's only one on the rack they usually won't get another one in.

So please parents we plead with you, we know you're just doing what you think is socially correct but for the love of flip colour taffeta, step away from the bridal store, it's a bridal store for a reason and teenage girls that aren't bridesmaids really don't belong in there. They are special little unicorns that need to run free in the latest trends, pretty little hem and necklines and sparkling fabrics with the hottest embellishments, and the best bit is, it doesn't have to cost you a mortgage payment - hurrah!

  1. I love the metallic dress.
I didn't go to my schools Prom (or as we called it Leaver's Do), but some of the dresses my friends wore were shocking. I think some people have been watching too many 80's American teen films.

  4. I understand it when girls wear something totally over the top (and incredibly matrony and not age-appropriate) when going to a prom, but personally I've always said (and if I had a daughter or little sister I'd share it with her, too) that this is such a beautiful age that it doesn't need to be enhanced in such a grotesque way. And I think that first dress from ASOS you picked is absolutely, totally and utterly perfect! x

  5. Haha! Pretty In Pink! They didn't even have them in my old school until recently, but some of the pics you come across are unbelievable. They spend sooooo much money on ugly dresses, it's insane.

  6. I think a lot of people have this fixed idea of what a prom dress should be and just go along with it. I think I would've 100% been a better dressed teen had we has ASOS back then ha!

  8. Exactly, you hit the nail on the head there! I feel like some of these 'prom dress' stores are taking advantage of a pressured market. Pah!

  9. I never went to prom - it wasn't really a thing at my school, but why spend hundreds for ONE night, it's like it's a wedding xx
