Autumn/Winter Denim at Fat Face + Jeans Guide!

Tuesday 15 September 2015

I'm a recovering denimaholic and at one point I had between 50-60 pairs of jeans in my wardrobe. This weekend I had a really big clear out, I think September is a great month for refreshing your wardrobe and my denim collection was due a big overhaul.

I remember taking part in a Twitter chat with a top denim designer a few years ago and they recommended having about 10 - 12 pairs of jeans. Granted, I still have more than that, but it's important to have certain denim staples in your wardrobe - suitable for every occasion. Fat Face have recently launched their new Autumn collection and because of my preference for skinny jeans, I was drawn to their latest range of jeggings

Jeggings are generally flattering for most shapes because they have a slight stretch in them. I recommend sticking to darker washes unless you're very confident with your legs, in which case you should opt for a lighter pair to show off your fierce pins! I wasn't sure which size to get in these black Twill jeggings, so I popped into my local store in Bristol and tried on a few pairs. I ended up getting the size 8 because although they look tiny on the hanger, they do have a lot of stretch in them! These are genuinely my new favourite jeggings - I want them in every colour.

Of course Autumn is all about layering (one of my favourite things to do - huzzah!), so I paired my jeans with this Callington Knitted Jacquard drapey jacket, again, in a size 8. It has a bit of an Aztec vibe which I love. It also comes in lots of other colours and prints (hello dreamy grey) and is great for throwing over tees/camis. I'll certainly be wearing this under a leather jacket when it cools down a bit more!

I know from experience buying denim can be a chore for some women but as I really enjoy it, I thought I'd share some advice on choosing flattering denim for different body shapes.

What denim styles will suit you?

- Pear shape (your hips are wider than your shoulders & you're smaller on top):
Opt for jean with a higher rise, I'd recommend either a high rise straight leg jean or skinny jean to elongate the leg.

- Hourglass shape (your hips & bust are about the same size - with a larger bottom):
Again, opt for a higher rise and pick a style to balance your curves. I'd recommend either boot cut, wide leg or kick flare jeans.

- Boyish (you don't have many curves - think Cameron Diaz & Kate Moss):
Most styles will suit you! Opt for jeans with a low rise and I'd recommend mostly skinny jeans and jeggings as these are your BFFs. Luckily for you, you can pretty much wear any style so feel free to go for jeans with crazy prints or try some flares to add curves. Styles with details on the pocket will help widen your slender hips.

- Apple (most of your weight is around your middle - giving a rounder shape on top with a flat bottom):
Show off your slim legs! Try to find a jean with plenty of stretch. I'd recommend a skinny jean or straight jean in a dark wash. If you have a flatter bottom, opt for high waisted jeans and try to find a pair with flap pockets to give your butt more volume.

Remember: Jeans which hide your leg shape will make you look bigger than you really are... Oversized jeans are comfy, but aren't flattering for everyone.

Do you shop at Fat Face? Do you have any tips for buying denim?
