Review - 'Womanity' by Thierry Mugler

Thursday 15 July 2010

Womanity was thrust upon me in the form of a bag charm shaped tester vial (!) whilst wandering through the hallowed Beauty Halls of Selfridges, Manchester.

The 1.2ml sample I was given by the lovely Thierry Mugler laden lady stayed in my Wildfox tote until yesterday when I remembered it was there and decided to have a sniff.

So, upon researching it I found that it's described as 'The first sweet-savoury fragrance by Thierry Mugler. A distinctive fragrance that will play its notes according to the emotions of all women. An engaging, mysterious and full of contrast scent is built around the theme of the fig fruit, a powerful symbol of femininity, with an exceptional fig and caviar accord. The inspiration for this innovative scent comes from the Cyclades Island of Greece, where the sweet smell of fig trees is mixed with the salty sea breeze of the ocean.' Well we'll see shall we Mr Mugler?

And what does 'sweet-savoury' smell like I hear you ask? Well it's really quite tasty! My first reaction was that it was a touch too strong and sweet. I'm usually a sucker for candylike perfumes like Mugler's Angel but the opening notes of Womanity were almost too mature to be candy, and my nose wasn't keen on the contradiction. However, I never judge a fragrance on the first drops that lands on the wrist so I let it settle. I returned to it later to find it had evened out into a richer, warmer scent, and like all the best sweet things, I wanted more! The fig notes are outstanding, I really did make an mmmmm sound, but I choose to ignore the reference to caviar because I don't like the idea of it, simple as. Overall, it's really quite the little bottle of sexiness. Other women may recognise the scent as representing something different, it's hard to put a finger on the category this fragrance falls into. I guess that's the idea of it, as women we all have a different sense of what the idea of 'womanity' means to us, so it's natural that a scent developed to embody all aspects of femininity is so difficult to classify. Which is a good thing, because it shows it works.

And the bottle? Well, it's what you expect from Mugler - innovative, strong and chic with a twist.

The slim pink bottle is feminine whilst the metallic top reminds me of the classic movie Metropolis, which itself features a powerful female symbolic figure.

Womanity is exclusive to Selfridges in the UK, and can be bought online here, prices start at £19 for the refillable 10ml eau de parfum and go up to £60 for the 80ml.

If you try it, be sure to come back here and tell me if your idea of womanity is the same as mine!
