La Redoute Capsule Wardrobe: Little Black Dress

Tuesday 1 September 2015

When I think about a capsule wardrobe, the first piece that springs to mind is a Little Black Dress. I own several different styles because they're so versatile and timeless. I was recently set the challenge of styling an LBD 5 different ways, for 5 different occasions by La Redoute. I would say I found it quite easy to wear the same dress in multiple ways because an LBD is essentially just a blank canvas.

The first look I created was the most obvious but the most classic. When you wear a beautiful dress like this, it does all the talking. I simply added some coral court shoes for a colour pop and a statement floral box clutch. I do love all black outfits but as it's summer, I opted to brighten my look up with these bright accessories.

My second look is an everyday work outfit. I work for a digital agency so the dress code is pretty relaxed but I always wear a blazer and smart shoes when in the office. This longline blazer works well with my Little Black Dress and again I've added a pop of colour with this red wide brim fedora. These oxford shoes complete my look and because they are flat, the length of my LBD is perfectly acceptable for work.

My third look is pretty casual and a little bit grungey. I love wearing leather and lace together and I think this combination creates quite an edgy look. Leather jackets always look cool when thrown over dresses, so this outfit is 'model off duty' inspired. If you want to make an LBD that little bit more fashionable, pair it with a biker jacket.

For my fourth outfit, I decided to style my LBD with a black fedora, metallic jumper and some shiny leather brogues. This jumper is one of my favourite knitwear pieces, it's slightly oversized and I love how it looks worn over my lace dress. This would be a great outfit for a lunch date because it's casual but the shoes make it look as if I've made an effort.

The final outfit I put together was a very casual look and it's the sort of thing I would wear shopping! I paired my Little Black Dress with some simple trainers, a statement kimono and a brightly coloured fedora. I think this is probably my favourite outfit because there's a common misconception that LBDs are just for party/occasion wear but this proves it's just not true. I don't think you should be afraid to wear trainers with a chic dress - if it's good enough for Alexa, it's good enough for me.
