Eastpak Artist Studio IV - Designers Against AIDS!

Friday 14 November 2014

Press releases drop into our inbox all day every day, but when one catches my eye I know it's really worth sharing so here we go!

Eastpak have released the designer creations for their fourth edition of the Eastpak Artist Studio (EAST) and boy is it a beauty! Joining forces in support of Designers Against AIDS, all 16 EAST designers have transformed a special edition blank Eastpak backpack into a unique work of art for charity. All of the exciting creations will be auctioned off and proceeds will be donated to Designers Against AIDS, which was founded to set up and promote projects which raise awareness of HIV/AIDS and help stop the spread of the disease around the world. All of these bags are amazing in different ways, so as a taster we've selected our top 5 from the 16 that will be up for auction on 1st December!

This guy needs no introduction, influential shoe designer Manolo Blahnik's design is inspired by his home country Spain. "Pompoms are a very important part of our culture and often form part of my collections. . . I really hope people will be inspired by my design. I feel very honored to be a part of this project and to help support such a worthy cause." Isn't is gorgeous?!

Jean Paul Gaultier's design is just ridiculously amazing! 1 bag and 3 vintage Japanese jackets combine to create one super garment! "I believe the condom is the greatest piece of clothing ever invented. My message to everyone is simple: 'Protect yourselves!'" The embroidery though, SWOON.

Italian designer Elio Fiorucci's fun and feminine design illustrates how the bag is more than just a container of things, it's a symbol of joy and an optimistic image of how we are and how travel should be. "We cannot afford to be blind, not even for love. Loving and being loved is the greatest luxury but it also means mutual respect." This one is perfect for everyday use, if you could bring yourself to do it!

This one is probably my fave, pop artist Christopher Lee Sauve's design is inspired by pop culture on the streets of New York and uses spray paint, found objects and cut up t-shirts from his own wardrobe. "There's been a decline in spreading awareness of HIV/AIDS since the 80's. It's important to create strong messages through art and fashion." Literally everything about this one excites me.

Finally, it wouldn't be a rawr post without a bit of faux fur right?! Spanish designer Sybilla has worked on turning Eastpak's usually sporty look into a more sophisticated couture-like finish. "There is still a lot to do when it comes to HIV prevention. More research is need to help everyone concerned; both patients and caregivers."
I picked this one out for our girl Steph of Faiiint, black on black, with a touch more black;)

The Auction opens on World Aids Day 1st December 2014 at 12pm, and closes on 21st December at 12am, and remember, all proceeds go to Designers Against AIDS. Fancy your chances for a good cause?

J - P.S. Watch HBO's The Normal Heart, it's powerful.
